Because of the SQL Server Express 2005 shipped with RMS is old and has compatibility issues with Windows 7 or above, For Windows 7 users, please download SQL Server Express 2005 SP4 and copy over the original SQL setup file in SO\SSE folder and run setup program. This way, RMS will auto install SQL Server for you if it has not been installed. For Windows 10 users, please download and manual install SQL Server Express 2012 (Select Mix Authentication Mode during setup) and SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility Components (SQLServer2005_BC.msi or SQLServer2005_BC_x64.msi) before running setup program. After that, you run service pack CU5 and hotfix rollup. Keep in mind you will need to right click the setup file and run it as administrator to install the service pack.

After installing Store Operations and service pack (optional but recommended, CU5 first and then hotfix rollup), follow the instructions below to apply the patch.

1. Create database and configure server connection with Store Operations Administrator, running SOPOSUSER.exe, accept license agreement and using the key in SN.txt to activate when it ask for. click Next and then click Cancel to quit the wizard.
2. Open "My Computer", change directory to Store Operations installation path, default dir is "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Retail Management System\Store Operations\", click on menu "Tools", select "Folder Options" menu option, then click "View" tab, make sure the "Hide extensions for known file types" is NOT selected.
- For Vista/Win7 users, please press Alt key to show up the menu.
3. Rename original SOPOSUSER.exe to SOPOSUSER.ext, copy SOPOSUSER.exe and Activator.dll to Store Operations installation directory, default path is "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Retail Management System\Store Operations\".
